Beating Dead Horses In Political Circuses ...

So, Katrina's the only hurricane that ever hit the Gulf Coast, and it was all because Karl Rove manipulated the weather with the Haliburton patented bad weather machine (so he can fool hapless Democrat leaders into making dumb statements publically) ... and Bush should have thrown his shovel into his pick-up truck, and sped to New Orleans, but he was eating bonbons and sneaking up on Laura while vacationing in picturesque Crawford Texas ...
From the NYT's, today:
But Congressional investigators have now learned that an eyewitness account of the flooding from a federal emergency official reached the Homeland Security Department's headquarters starting at 9:27 p.m. the day before, and the White House itself at midnight.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency official, Marty Bahamonde, first heard of a major levee breach Monday morning. By late Monday afternoon, Mr. Bahamonde had hitched a ride on a Coast Guard helicopter over the breach at the 17th Street Canal to confirm the extensive flooding. He then telephoned his report to FEMA headquarters in Washington, which notified the Homeland Security Department.
"FYI from FEMA," said an e-mail message from the agency's public affairs staff describing the helicopter flight, sent Monday night at 9:27 to the chief of staff of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and recently unearthed by investigators. Conditions, the message said, "are far more serious than media reports are currently reflecting. Finding extensive flooding and more stranded people than they had thought — also a number of fires."
Michael D. Brown, who was the director of FEMA until he resigned under pressure on Sept. 12, said in a telephone interview Thursday that he personally notified the White House of this news that night, though he declined to identify the official he spoke to. (yup, another fabulous reference to "anonymous")
In the article, Mr. Brown blames the fact that FEMA's under Homeland Security now.
"The real story is with this new structure," he said. "Why weren't more things done, or what prevented or delayed Mike Brown from being able to do what he would have done and did do in any other disaster?"
No, Mr. Brown. The
real story is what the heck happened to those
billions of dollars that had been given to Louisiana (Democrat) officials over the past decade which was supposed to build up those levies.
Farther down in the article:
One reason the city was unable to help itself, investigators said, is that it never bought the basic equipment needed to respond to the long-predicted catastrophe.
Well, why the h3ll not? Did the New Orleans city fathers think there was some kind of invisible force-field protecting them from the Gulf storms?
Somehow, tiny little Port Arthur Texas managed to have a clue that hurricanes bring water. So did Beaumont and Sabine Pass -- and by the way, Sabine Pass gets hit
alot during storm season. Port Charles over in Louisiana managed. So did Gulfport, Mississippi.
But, I guess those little towns didn't have benefit of having large amounts of federal monies thrown at them over the past 10-20 years to prepare for disasters. And focusing on them doesn't embarass Bush, so that's not much fun for the national press.
And, it's important for Congressional Democrats to waste time and money on endless probes designed to embarass Republicans -- and for Republicans to support bipartisan investigatory committees so they also can waste time and taxpayer money to make headlines for themselves.
I'll tell you exactly what happened, and I'll do it for free:
Sch1t happens. Cities along the Gulf Coast get hit by hurricanes. If you've got money to build up your levies, you better spend it on building up your levies, or sooner or later, your city gets drowned. And, if you're the mayor of a big city on the Gulf Coast, and your city services aren't prepared for a hurricane, then you're a moron, and if you get re-elected, then your constituents are also morons.I am sick of hearing about Katrina -- and I'm tired of our illustrious Congressmen beating dead horses in political circuses.
