Free Speech And Acts Of Wanton Cruelty ...

You're reading this cute Christmas card correctly, but I'll type it out for you:

Dear Soldier: Have A great time in the war, and have a creat time dieing in the war.

PS: DIE!!!

This little gem was sent to Joshua Sparling, who's recovering from wounds at Walter Reed Hospital.

My mind's numb over the cruelty, and I don't think for an instant that a child composed it, nor do I think that there is anything less than wanton barbarity behind it.

But, somebody wrote it, and somebody sent it.

I'll tell you what: Why not just push a disabled person down the stairs? Trip a guy on crutches? Laugh and point at a bald lady who lost her hair in chemo? Chuckle at a kid having an asthma attack, or make fun at a deaf person's attempt to speak!

Here's some other grins: Why not break a birdy's wing, and watch it flap around? Or pour kerosene on a cat and light it?

Gosh. Can't do that in polite society, can you? There are consequences.

Oh, but why not inflict a little mental torture on a wounded US soldier, and call it Freedom of Speech. That's the ticket.

And whether or not the sender of this little nugget of inhumanity is part of Code Pink ... he or she has been emboldened by Code Pink and their anti -war brethren, who are staging protests every single Friday night at Walter Reed Hospital.

Landry's one of the Freepers staging counterprotests at Walter Reed. Here's what he blogged after going out in freezing cold to support the troops.

One soldier, back from serving in Iraq, referred to the pinkos by saying to me, "They claim to support me, but they don't...."

I've written before that the pinkos leave in a hurry at about 9 pm. They get outta there before the bus with wounded troops and their families returns from a free dinner at Fran O'Brien's steakhouse.

The pinkos were getting flipped off by passengers on the bus and so they scurry away. Troop supporters? My Aunt Martha. After the pinkos flee, FReepers usually cross the street, carrying pro-troops signs and flags, and wave to the O'Brien's bus from all four corners. Tonight after the pinkos had run away, a car pulled over and a stern-looking man got out and approached us on our secondary corner. He asked what we were there for. We told him. He said he was an outpatient at WR and thanked us for being there. Because of his schedule he's not at WRAMC at the same time as the pinkos, so he hasn't been able to tell them to leave WR patients alone.

I've got mixed feelings about protests of any kind outside a hospital, because I think any kind of demonstration within three miles of a hospital is inappropriate. However, we cannot let the Code Pinkers torment our wounded without some kind of counter. So, if you can support the Freeper Counter Protestors in any way, click to the DC Chapter website, where you'll find a calendar and some information.

Incidentally, the Christmas card above was the only one Joshua Sparger's gotten so far. So, if you have it in your heart to write him a card, send it to:
